SM&LC Mineral Collection

Alongside the many workshop areas, the building also houses our ‘Mineral Collection’, which currently numbers in excess of 5000 pieces.

The bulk of our collection comprises minerals from Scotland and the UK as well as many wonderful specimens from the rest of the world.

Within the collection are several important sub-collections including a large number of polished marble specimens from around the world (Walter Brown) and a large proportion of the Scottish Free Church mineral collection.

Scotlands Geology.

Scotland for its small size possesses a more complex geology than anywhere else in the world, consequently the country has a rich mineral legacy.

There are around 650 mineral species now known to occur in Scotland, and our collection is a testament to that.

Scotland was also one of the first countries in the world to publish a record of it’s mineralogy, in the form of the 1901 volume ‘The Mineralogy Of Scotland’ by Matthew Forster Heddle.

Viewing our Collection.

Our collection is, in part, regularly displayed in our Mineral Collection Area for members and visitors to view.

We have recently begun the process of displaying them again in rotation, the task having previously taken 10 years to work through the entire collection.

If you would like to view our collection then drop in to one of our open sessions or use our Contact Form to make an appointment.
