Club Library

The Club has a well-stocked library of over 1020 books, maps & pamphlets of which there are 860 different titles. Many of these include different editions and are available for reference within the Club, or for Members to borrow, normally for a period of up to 2 months.

Books are all labelled and numbered under various categories alphabetically, such as  Agates;  Faceting; Fossils;  Geology – general interest to regional guides; Gemstones and Gemmology; Jewellery;  Mineralogy – general, historical to regional; Silverwork and General Interest.

Topics range from academic & research studies to pictures of pebbles on the beach.  These can be from around Britain, North America, Iceland, Northern Europe, South Africa to Australia and New Zealand. eg the Story of the Earth; Geological Mapping; Physical Geology; World Minerals; Decorative Stone and Marbles; Building Stones; Volcanoes; Meteorites; Gold; Opal; Celtic Art, etc.

In the glass-fronted cabinets, the categories listed are grouped according to size, with smaller books on the two upper shelves and larger books on the two lowest ones.  There is also a mid-section for eg Members’ photographs of field excursions, “At Homes”, foreign trips; mineral DVDs or video tapes.

A separate cabinet, for reference only within the Club, holds historic books such as Heddle’s ‘Mineralogy of Scotland’ vols 1 and 2;  ‘Scenery and Geology of Scotland’ (1865) by Geikie, ‘Achat/Agate’ I, II, III – World Agates by Johann Zenz, ‘Scottish Pebble Jewellery’ by Nick Crawford,  ‘Gem Cutting – a Lapidary’s Manual’ by John Sinkankas and ‘Gem Testing Techniques’ by Alan Hodgkinson amongst many others.

Also, the Club subscribes to the Lapidary Journal and Rock ‘n Gem Magazine. Issues from the previous year and the current ones are available in the Coffee Room for Members to read at their leisure.  Files of back numbers and other items eg Scottish Geology Magazine, are retained in the Club Office.
