Eyes of Stone for Andra Ursuta

Glass and Stone eye inserts for Bronze Sculpture

SMLC had an enquiry about cutting some stone and glass eyes by artist Andra Ursuta for an upcoming exhibition.

Andra Ursuța is a Romanian-American sculptor who has lived and worked in New York since 2000. Ursuța is known for her nihilistic portrayal of the human condition, confronting issues such as patriotism, violence against women and the “expulsion of ethnic groups”.

Ursuța’s work is held in public collections worldwide.

The work involved cutting Cullet glass and rock to fit into a life sized bronze head that was again cast by Powderhall Bronze in Edinburgh.

A tricky project to complete as the eyes not only had to be cut to fit an existing shape, but also had to work front and back in 3 dimensions.

There were a few setbacks when completing this work as some of the glass had air bubbles in it and ultimately cracked while being worked, with another stone suffering a similar fate due to a natural flaw in the stone.

The remaining stones, thankfully, cut successfully and, once polished, saw themselves fitted to the bronze and sent to Greece, where the exhisbition was held.

The finished eyes were cut from stable cullet glass (waste glass) and jasper beach pebbles from Auchmithie in Angus, Scotland.
