About Us
The Scottish Mineral & Lapidary Club is a workshop, meeting place and resource for those interested in Rocks and Minerals.
Our main objective is to encourage an interest in natural minerals and in the crafts and craftsmanship that relates to them.
The workshop centres around traditional lapidary work, precious and semi-precious stone cutting (or faceting) and silverwork.
We also engage in more unusual projects, such as creating the Pommel stone for the new ‘Elizabeth Sword‘, which now resides in Edinburgh Castle as part of the Honours of Scotland (The Scottish Crown Jewels) .
Our club premises also houses an excellent library and a nationally important mineral collection.
We have an active and diverse membership comprising some 100 full members, junior members and associates.
While some members choose to specialise in one particular field, others are encouraged to dabble in many. All our members are keen enthusiasts in their chosen fields and are only too willing to assist others, whether they are newcomers or ‘old hands’.
Outreach work is also an important aspect of what we do, such as displays at the National Museum of Scotland and Edinburgh Central Library as well as public engagements as part of Edinburgh Doors Open day and Dynamic Earth during the Edinburgh Science Festival.
To allow us to continue to create such an environment we operate as a Charitable Organisation. We also have a strong non-commercial ethic and as such, our members may not use the club and it’s facilities for commercial working.
The club itself may take on small commissions from the public from time to time with all proceeds going to club funds.
